West Philadelphia & University City

Just west of the Schuylkill River, University City gets its name from the three well-known schools in the neighborhood: the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, and the University of the Sciences. Commercial, residential, and culinary landscapes are shaped by the large populations of students and young professionals that call this area home. Bars and restaurants populate the neighborhood’s many tree-lined streets while the nearby college campuses give the area a distinctly youthful vibe.

A growing ethnic food scene has attracted a fair share of Ethiopian and other cuisines, while Clark Park is home to a year-round farmer’s market. Aside from the universities, the eastern side of University City is home to several medical institutions, independent centers of scientific research, 30th Street Station, and the Cira Centre. The rest of West Philadelphia, with its Victorian and early 20th-century housing stock, is primarily residential and is home to an ethnically and economically diverse population. Prominent neighborhoods in West Philly include Spruce Hill and Cedar Park.
